Resumo: Due to the International System of Units (SI) redefinition in 2019, the kilogram is now based on the Planck constant and no longer related to a physical artefact, the international kilogram prototype (IPK). The Kibble balance is one of the experiments which will be used to realise the redefined kilogram and relates mass to fundamental electrical standards. The present work demonstrates a prototype of a Kibble balance, developed at Inmetro’s Ultrasound Laboratory (Labus), using 3D printing and a Raspberry microcontroller. The prototype showed the ability to measure masses at the milligram level (100 mg to 600 mg) at a relative uncertainty of 7 %.

Resumo: Ultrasound is present in everyone’s life daily, from medical applications to diagnostics as used in industry. Medium-frequency ultrasound (1 to 5 MHz) is regularly used in medicine for therapeutic purposes, and its effects depend on the application applied to achieve the expected result. Knowledge about the application applied to clinical practice is necessary since, if misused, it can have adverse effects, making the treatment ineffective, putting the physical integrity of the user and operator at risk. It is possible to determine the ultrasonic power through the measured mass since this quantity is indirectly linked to ultrasonic power. Although there is a methodology for calibration, the high cost due, such as a specialized technician and specific measuring instruments, make it difficult to maintain equipment maintenance, sometimes keeping them out of technical specifications for long periods. A reliable, low-cost, and more accessible methodology to provide preventive care routinely by physical therapists would be of utmost interest. The present study aims to experimentally verify whether a variation in atmospheric pressure impacts the results of ultrasonic power agreement using a semi-analytical scale to establish an accessible methodology as a power reference. It can be seen that the results of the measured power mass do not change as a function of atmospheric pressure. The average power value is within the limit specified by the IEC 61689 standard.

Resumo: Biodiesel is a renewable fuel, biodegradable and alternative to diesel oil consisting chemically of fatty acid alkyl esters and obtained by the transesterification reaction. After transesterification, undesirable components may remain in biodiesel. The presence of these components negatively influences the properties and performance of biodiesel. This research aims to evaluate biodiesel quality, using the quantitative ultrasound technique to determine the presence of the contaminant glycerol in biodiesel samples. The blends used in this study consisted of biodiesel and glycerol varying from 0 % to 0.5 % of glycerol by mass. The measurement uncertainty was evaluated according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The speed of sound in biodiesel/glycerol blends was measured by the pulse-echo technique (@ 5 MHz) and was considered equivalent for the different concentrations studied. The maximum measurement uncertainty obtained was 2.2 m·s -1 (0.16 %).

Resumo: Air pollution is a severe problem that affects all regions of the planet. Its origins can be natural or anthropic, that is, caused by the actions of human beings. Nitrogen-based pollutants are gases capable of damaging the ozone layer and harming the population’s health, so taking measurements online is essential. Photothermal techniques can be used for this purpose. Thus, this article aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the photoacoustic method for the analysis of nitrous oxide through meta-analysis. With the studies participating in the meta-analysis, it is observed that photoacoustics has several advantages over chromatography, further demonstrating that the technique is capable of efficiently measuring nitrous oxide gas.

Resumo: With the increase in the global competition in conjunction with the country’s current economic situation, the need to optimize industrial processes becomes even more evident. The improvement in reliability, quality, and productivity provides even more competitive environments. This work aims to improve the most critical part of the production process of synthetic fiber ropes. Since 2019, about 3 tons (5.3%) of the production of a synthetic fiber ropes manufacturing industry located in Baixada Fluminense – RJ (Brazil) was discarded by dimensional control. In 2020 it was evidenced the discard of about 4 tons (12%) of production. The most critical stage is in the intermediate process of producing the strands that make up the rope, so the main focus of the control of measures will be at this stage of the process. A parallel measurement methodology will be implemented to verify and correct possible variations. The instrument is a counter with an inductive sensor connected to a flywheel pulley that will be in contact with the material to be produced. The measurement will be performed by the ratio of the number of pulses, the geometry of the pulley, and a correction factor, if necessary.

Resumo: The aim of this work is to measure the thermal conductivity of nylon 66, using a steady-state temperature field. To this end, an experimental apparatus was designed to provide the fundamental conditions for one-dimensional heat conduction, under steady state. The boundary conditions were assumed as type 2 on the upper face and type 1 on the rear face of a plate-form sample. A heat flux sensor was placed on the center of the upper face to measure a constant heat flux supplied by electrical resistance. Two type-k thermocouples were positioned to measure the temperature drop between the plate faces. Then, these measures are replaced into a mathematical model to determine the thermal conductivity of the material under analysis. The uncertainty assessment using the Monte Carlo method indicates low dispersion of the thermal conductivity, about 2.00 %, at a confidence level of 95.45 %. This indicates a good precision of the experimental apparatus developed, enabling its application with other non-conductor materials, when the conditions established in the mathematical modelling are strictly followed.

Resumo: The correlation between ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and the quality of concrete parts is a resource that has been explored for decades. However, the significant variability of production of these constructive materials tends to require more robust techniques for better reliability of results. This work adopts a metrological approach in the correlation of the ultrasonic pulse velocity and the respective compressive strength values through destructive tests, evaluated in the first ages (7, 14, 30, and 90 days). For this analysis, three different concrete mixes were molded into cylindrical shapes, using different proportions of the inputs that make up this material. After undergoing statistical and metrological treatment, the results obtained allowed to identify a similar behavior of UPV growth with the strengths of the concrete samples, especially when analyzing the measurement uncertainty bars. However, it is noteworthy that it is necessary to expand the tests in a more significant number of concrete mixtures. It is expected that the improvement of these tests can help reduce costs and execution times of concrete structures where stripping depends on the strength achieved.

Resumo: The present paper studied the metrological impact on the ultrasound group velocity in not storing the agar phantoms in the water-glycerol-benzalkonium chloride maintenance mixture. The ultrasonic velocity and the phantom’s thickness were measured by the pulse-echo technique seven times within 45 days, whereas four replicates were carried out under repeatability conditions. The phantom’s thickness did not differ statistically along the days since the normalized error was less than 1.0. Based on the results obtained, one can conclude that the ultrasound group velocity decreased in a logarithmic function along the days.

Resumo: Despite being classified today as a secondary reference point of temperature, ice point (0.0 °C) is still very important in many thermometry applications due to its simplicity, effectiveness, reproducibility and low cost. Uncertainties as low as some hundreds of microkelvin can be achieved, but it depends on the level of care of the experimental procedure practiced by the laboratory. The Thermometry Laboratory of Inmetro (Later) has adopted for a long time a conservative value available in literature for the uncertainty of the ice point. In order to reach more realistic results, in line with the specific equipment and experimental procedure of the lab, a study on the reproducibility of the ice point realization was conducted, enabling a significant reduction of the uncertainty previously adopted. In addition, from the uncertainty analysis performed, it was possible to show the great importance of the standardization of the ice bath preparation procedure for the achievement of better results.

Resumo: Welding is a vital process for the industry, being present in most production chains. However, the absence of general solutions for welding processes becomes an object of study to develop and improve welding techniques and quality inspection tests. The purpose of this work was to metrologically evaluate the welding electrical parameters (voltage, current and electrical power) for the adequate supply of welded specimens for the evaluation project of ultrasonic inspections through machine learning. Initially , we sought to ensure the metrological traceability of measurements through the use of a portable data acquisition system during welding. The data were evaluated quantitatively, through calculation of measurement uncertainties, and qualitatively, through visual inspection and x-ray, showing different results of electrical welding power for each welded specimen. These results demonstrated the possibility of characterizing variations in voltage, current and electrical power, providing electrical limits that allowed obtaining approved specimens.

The adoption of methodologies capable of predicting the availability of systems susceptible to aging is essential for this. Thus, the paper presents a method capable of predicting a system’s behavior based on its degradation caused by aging. Predictive and statistical analysis techniques were used, such as Fault Tree and Fussel-Vesely Techniques, Principal Component Analysis, and the Monte Carlo Method. The proposed methodology considers uncertainties associated, which is a determining factor in quantifying the probability of systems failure. As a result of the proposal, the paper presents a model capable of detailing the behavior of a system, adopted as an example application case, and the contribution of its components to its unavailability, according to Weibull’s Probability Density Function. The present paper has relevance regarding studies and research about aging, indicating a way for analysis and applications in installations that require high reliability of equipment and systems.

The greater are the deviations of measuring instruments used in the market, the greater are the money under uncertainty in the economy. That market asymmetry can be reduced by legal metrology processes, decreasing losses to both seller and buyers, ensuring trust. The Brazilian National Metrology Institute, Inmetro, in 2021, introduced the economic distortion as one of the indicator to evaluate the performance of legal metrology services. The preliminary results were obtained for the fuel market, showing that the economic distortion in 2019 and 2020, represented R$ 87,3 million for the final demand.

Resumo: Volume measurement of manufactured liquids and liquid raw materials carried out by road tankers (RT) is usual and has economic relevance, justifying the need to ensure metrological reliability. It requires some actions, including choosing suitable standards. In this scenario and considering the practice for type evaluation of measuring instruments, the article proposes a case study, analyzing performance data from a positive displacement meter, a measurement principle widely used as a standard in RT verifications. Current criteria of legal metrology were used: for the 0.3 accuracy class, the maximum permissible error (MPE) is 0.2%. The meter was tested with three different fluids (with different viscosities), and measurement errors were contrasted with the MPE specification, being considered compliant in all situations. On the other hand, risk analysis tools for conformity assessment were incorporated (JCGM 106) based on the different consumer risks, the formulated decision rule, and the measurement uncertainty. Even though, when including the risk analysis, the flowmeter was considered non-compliant, showing the need for a better basis decision using measurement uncertainty in legal metrology actions.

Resumo: Despite several scientific proofs about the success of using therapeutic ultrasound for different therapies, there are also reports of failures and ineffectiveness in applied treatments. Much of this failure is due to the poor working conditions of the ETUS equipment used, which causes the reduction or absence of therapeutic effects. This survey asked professionals about the methods they use and the methods they know and are available on the market to test their equipment through a questionnaire. This study aimed to discuss, for the metrological perspective, the use of ultrasound physiotherapy equipment in Brazil. A problem for the metrological reliability of ETUS is related to the lack of metrological culture among users, who do not adopt procedures to assess their equipment, often because they are unaware of its importance and need. Periodic checks on equipment would give physiotherapists a resource with greater reliability and possibly more efficient therapies.

Resumo: Good Laboratory Practices – GLP, are a set of principles that define a quality system. They have been designed to ensure that laboratory experimentation is performed appropriately. Quality management systems in general and GLP compliant ones in particular are becoming more important every day. GLP compliance facilitates the acceptance of data in the context of regulatory processes where authorities have to assess the safety of new products. As a consequence, it is an important tool to overcome technical export barriers to OECD member countries. However, compliance to these systems can be complex. As a consequence, many laboratories are unable to implement GLPs in their daily activities risking to lose competitiveness in the market. In this work we present BPL++, a Laboratory Information Management System that assists in implementing GLP compliance in laboratories. BPL++ is an efficient and easy to use system with a Web based interface. It can simplify GLP adoption and increase laboratory competitiveness. BPL++ has been evaluated by GLP experts and is currently being used at INMETRO.

Resumo: Ferromagnetic foreign bodies accidentally inserted in patients usually need to be surgically removed. Their location can be estimated by measuring the magnetic field generated by the object and solving the magnetic inverse problem to locate the source based on the magnetic field maps configuration. Considering ferromagnetic straight needles (hypodermic or sewing, for example) and a computer simulation of the magnetic flux density based on BiotSavart’s Law, this paper presents an algorithm based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to find the depth, the angles of inclination and rotation and the center of the needle inside the human body. The proposed model presents low RMSE values and type A measurement uncertainty for the depth, the inclination angle, the rotation angle, and for the displacement Δ between the midpoint of the distance connecting the magnetic field extreme values and the foreign body center, all of which adequate for use in therapeutic procedures.

Resumo: Noninvasive magnetic mapping for locating non-ferromagnetic metallic foreign bodies, such as firearm projectiles, has a promising application for guiding accurate surgical removals. The strategy consists of inducing eddy currents in the metallic object by applying an external alternating magnetic field. A secondary magnetic field generated by the induced currents in the foreign body can be detected by a high-sensitivity transducer. Previously proposed systems presented constraints to the measurement capability of the transducer imposed by the primary magnetic field interference on their sensing elements. Overcoming these limitations, this work proposes a new configuration of the system that decouples the excitation and measuring stages, arranging their elements symmetrically to generate a spatial distribution of the field lines in such a way that adequate magnetic flux density levels are produced in the region of the foreign body, with values nearly not-detectable at the sensor location. Thereby, the secondary field generated by the induced eddy currents can be amplified, allowing the detection of smaller fragments located at greater depth distances from the skin. The measuring system concept, the spatial distribution of the primary and secondary magnetic fields, and the new approach’s performance to localize foreign bodies are presented.

Resumo: Dentistry implants methods are recursively enhancing the image localisation approach to improve patient point of intercession accuracy. Previous planning of the surgical act is on the cut edge of the technology. Materials that mimic the implant house, i.e., the maxillary bone, have been developed and improved material technology. Standard non-invasive and non-ionising radiation technologies are relevant tools to that approach. Ultrasound imaging techniques play a prominent role in that matter. Nevertheless, recent polymer materials specially developed to help the pre-implant studies had not been evaluated about their homogeneity of ultrasound parameters. Two specially developed polymer materials have their speed of sound analysed in a metrologically based methodology. At 1 MHz, a set of 10 blocks were considered statistically equivalent, unless one specimen. The speed of sound was 1020 m s -1 (expanded uncertainty for p = 0.95 equals 22 m s -1 ) and 1676 m s -1 (U0.95 = 10 m s -1 ). The ultrasound homogeneity is a vital outcome of the reliability of those materials used in dentistry implant pre-clinical studies.

Dos equipamentos avaliados, 45% apresentaram alguma falha na fabricação que comprometem o operador eou a amostra. E 50% apresentaram algum parâmetro em não conformidade com os parâmetros de desempenho especificados pela norma SFA/ANSI 49.
